James (“Jim”) Fatheree is Executive Director – Washington of GR Group Asia, a position he’s held since September 2018. GR Group Asia is the Washington, DC, office of GR Japan, a public affairs and government relations firm headquartered in Tokyo, with offices in Osaka and now Seoul, through GR Korea. The firm works primarily with U.S. and European companies and NGOs to address regulatory and other issues in Japan and Korea through the design and implementation of strategic public policy and advocacy plans in various sectors, including life sciences.
Most recently, Jim was Vice President for Asia at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, where he provided leadership and management oversight for a regional program covering China, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia and APEC. Previously, as Executive Director, Asia, Jim helped lead the Chamber's advocacy in support of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement in 2015-16, and the Asia Division’s work on digital trade.
From June 2012 – June 2017, Jim was responsible for Japanese and Korean affairs and regional trade issues and played the lead role in managing the Chamber's advocacy work regarding implementation, then renegotiation of, the US-Korea Free Trade Agreement.
As President of the U.S.-Japan Business Council from 2001-2015 Jim worked with U.S. companies and the U.S. and Japanese governments to address market access, investment, intellectual property, tax and regulatory issues in a wide range of industries in Japan, including life sciences. Through his work with the USJBC, Jim established a reputation as an effective advocate for U.S. business interests in Japan, and a strong partner in the U.S. - Japan economic relationship.
Jim resides in Washington, DC with his wife, Richelle, with whom he has three sons.
