Dr. Hickman is a founder & Chief Scientist of Hesperos, Inc. He is also the Founding Director of the NanoScience Technology Center at the University of Central Florida. Previously, he was the Hunter Endowed Chair of Bioengineering at Clemson University. Dr. Hickman has a Ph.D. from MIT in Chemistry. The past 25 years, he has studied the interaction of biological species with modified surfaces, both in industry & academia. While in industry, he established one of the first bioelectronics labs focused on cell-based sensors & their integration with electronic & MEMS devices. He has worked at NSF & DARPA in the area of biological computation. He was an AIMBE Board Member from 2009-2013 & Co-Chaired 6 AIMBE/NIH Workshops on “Validation & Qualification of New In Vitro Tools & Models for The Pre-clinical Drug Discovery Process”(2012-17). Drs. Hickman & Shuler won the 2015 Lush Prize in Science, which Supports Animal Free Testing. He has 135 publications, 20 book chapters, & 22 issued patents.
