Philadelphia is an epicenter of novel medical research and it is now known as “Cellicon Valley” based on its historic and innovative R&D activities and milestones. Greater Philadelphia is home to nearly 500 medical institutions - including five children’s hospitals and four National Cancer Institute-designated cancer research centers, seven medical schools, three schools of pharmacy, two dental schools, and schools of podiatric medicine, optometry, and veterinary medicine. University City is at the core of this innovative, collaborative research that delivers breakthrough results. Most notable is the recent collaborative effort of University of Pennsylvania with The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Novartis to develop and commercialize the world’s first genetically engineered immune therapy, a T-cell treatment for pediatric leukemia; Spark Therapeutics discovery and development of therapies for inherited retinal diseases and neurodegenerative diseases, and plans for continued development of wet labs, research space and mixed-use facilities at uCity Square, Pennovation and Schuylkill Yards. We’ll visit three of the leading R&D-focused centers of excellence in Philadelphia’s University City neighborhood, located just 15 minutes from the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Explore Pennovation Center, Schuylkill Yards, and uCity Square, home to the University City Science Center, CIC & BioLabs@CIC. Learn more about this tour here: https://convention.bio.org/tours/.
